Reminder: Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday Morning

daylight savings 2016

Daylight Saving Time is back again, and this Sunday, we’ll gain that precious hour back when the clock strikes 2am on November 6th. So whether you’re out on the town or at home in bed, you get an extra 60 minutes of partying or sleeping the night away.

Fast Facts

  • Benjamin Franklin suggested Daylight Saving Time (DST) in his essay, “An Economical Project,” as a way to save candles.

  • The time shift first occurred under President Woodrow Wilson to help the war effort during World War I.

  • Daylight Saving Time used to be called Fast Time.

  • DST did not become official in the United States until Congress passed the Uniform Time Act in 1996 with the intention to save energy.

  • Nations that don’t spring forward or back - China, India, Japan, Australia, and South America.

  • Parts of the U.S. and U.S. territories that don’t practice DST - Hawaii, Arizona, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

How To Adjust

  1. Don’t stay up late! Our circadian rhythms get thrown off twice a year during DST. Your body may wake you up early on Sunday morning so when you set your clocks back on Saturday don’t expect an extra hour of sleep if you stay up late!

  2. Use the sun! Try getting as much sun exposure in the morning and late afternoon after switching the clocks to help the transition.

  3. Take your time! DST is like jet lag. Getting used to a new time schedule can be tough. Add a nap where you can to help with drowsiness. 30 minutes is more than enough to help!

Tip: To ensure your phone will update automatically Saturday night, go to Settings - General - Date & Time - “Set Automatically.”
