Why should I service my watch

We all know that watch manufacturers generally recommend that you have your watch serviced every 3-5 years to maintain optimal functioning.  But why?  Why fix something that is still running?  Isn't it just a way for companies to drum up service business?  Think of it like this, if we are smart, we dutifully change the oil in our cars, even though they are still running.
