About the Brand

Leon Breitling founded Breitling in 1884 in Grenchen, Switzerland. The luxury sports watch world would never be the same. Breitling and his heirs (who owned the company through the 1970s) focused heavily on chronographs — timepieces that can double as stopwatches with the push of a button. They created one of the first wrist-worn chronographs in 1915, and in 1952 released the Breitling Navitimer, a beloved pilot’s watch with a logarithmic slide rule integrated into its rotating bezel.

Breitling’s pilot watch focus makes it a favorite of aviators. But the company stands for so much more. Their Chronomat, Professional, Superocean, and Top Time are all fabulous timepieces with a robust vintage and modern market. Car lovers geek out over the brand’s Bentley collaboration. A Breitling has been a Bond watch: In Thunderball, Q gives Sean Connery’s Bond a Top Time equipped with a geiger counter. (A pilot wearing a Breitling Navitimer at the beginning of the movie comes to a much more unfortunate end.) Jerry Seinfeld is a notable Breitling fan. And even survivalists can get behind the brand: In 2003, two pilots stranded in Antarctica used their Breitling Emergencies, which are equipped with an emergency transmitter, to call for help after their helicopter crashed.
