About the Brand

Bulova is a storied watch company with a unique place in American history. Founded by Bohemian immigrant Joseph Bulova in 1875, it was one of the first American watch companies to produce standardized watch parts and launch a full line of women’s watches. It made its mark among the American public in 1926 as the first company to advertise on the radio (“At the tone, it’s eight o’clock, Bulova watch time”) and on television in 1941 (a test pattern modified to look like a clock showing the time for one whole minute). Its electric clocks and rectangular plated watches with a strong curvature to fit the wrist were extremely popular in the 1930s and ‘40s.

Charles Lindbergh was awarded a Bulova “Lone Eagle” after completing the first solo flight across the Atlantic. Bulova made war watches for the U.S. Government during World War Two and innovated wristwatch alarm functions, durable hairsprings, and shock-resistant, waterproof cases in the 1950s. The Bulova Accutron’s 360-hertz tuning fork (powered by a one-transistor electronic oscillator) made it the first electronic watch ever mass produced, and the brand made a number of notable quartz watches in the 1980s, including the wildly futuristic and effective Computron LED. A Bulova’s even been on the moon, twice (take that, Omega). The company was bought by Casio in 2008, and its wide variety of interesting vintage and modern-era watches make it one of our favorite watch brands of all time.
